Virgil Earp

"The oldest of the Earp brothers, Virgil Earp was born July 18, 1843 in Kentucky.

At the age of 17 he married 15 year old Ellen Rysdam. They soon separated from each other because both families were enraged. He went on to fight in the 3 major battles of the Civil War. When he returned, he found that Ellen had thought him dead and she moved on.

Virgil married Rozilla Draggoo on May 28, 1870 in Lamar Missouri. He left 3 years later and there are no records as to what happened to his wife.

He next met Alvira Sullivan in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and soon moved with her to Prescott, Arizona. Here he started a saw mill, and worked part time as Deputy Sheriff. On November 5, 1878 he was elected Constable of the Prescott Precinct.

Virgil was the first to hear about the booming town of Tombstone and wrote his brothers. Between November 1879 and January 1880 the Earps arrived in Tombstone. Before leaving (Nov. 27, 1879), Virgil became a Deputy U.S. Marshal."
